2023 University of Michigan Livingston Awards for International Journalists

 In order to reward excellent reporting and advance the careers of journalists under the age of 35, the Livingston Awards for Young Journalists were established in 1981. The Livingston Awards have recognized outstanding young journalists and the subsequent group of newsroom executives for more than 40 years.

$10,000 awards are given out annually for local, national, and international reporting. Our team of judges, who have a history of dedication to our program and are well-known for their journalism accomplishments, chooses the winners. Print, web, video, audio, and data visualization entries are all welcome for the Livingston Awards.

Winning the prize enables talented young journalists to gain the self-assurance and institutional support they need to carry on with their ambitious ideas. Winners that receive national exposure have fresh stories, new audiences, and new career options.

Goal and Advantages of the University of Michigan Livingston Awards Three categories—local, national, and worldwide reporting—will each receive a $10,000 prize. There isn't a cost to enter. Instead of the media organizations, the journalists receive the prize money directly.

Qualification Standards for University of Michigan Livingston Awards

By December 31, 2022, participants must be 34 years of age or younger.

Each byline must be at least 18 years old to be eligible.

Each person may submit one entry. A single piece or a maximum of three pieces, either from a published series, an original work and its subsequent developments, or three pieces that are obviously connected by a beat, may be included in one submission. The same company must publish every installment in the series.

A media organization is permitted to submit an unlimited number of submissions, provided that each reporter only submits one item.

People can enter on their own or through their organization.

Print, internet, audio, video, and Work in audio and data visualization is acceptable. Photography that is still is ineligible.

The piece must run in outlets under American control. Citizens of the United States are not required to enter.

The entries must either explicitly address current affairs or provide fresh details on previously occurring events. Commentary and features are acceptable.

Materials created in the normal course of a journalist's professional production must be included in submissions. The Livingston Awards do not accept materials created particularly for submission by journalists.

Student publications are not accepted.

Work published or appearing within the calendar year ending December 31, 2022, is the only work that is eligible for competition.

The Livingston Awards reserve the right to utilize any segment, in whole or in part, of any submitted work for promotional or instructional reasons.

Winners will take part in a community activity.

You must register for a free Submittable account in order to apply. Before making your final submission, you can always save your information and come back to the entry form.

You will be required to include the name of the media outlet and the name of the item or series you are submitting.

The area of your entry will be required of you. Choose your region based on the city or state where the media outlet that published or aired your entry is located. Your region would be Mid-Atlantic, for instance, if you reside in California and your entry was published by a media outlet based in Washington, D.C. Click here to find your region.
